Getting Around Rome

CSIT 2015

City transportation tickets

Subway and buses can be used using the same tickets. Tickets can be bought at selling machines in each subway/train station and at selected bus stops using credit cards or cash, or at most newspaper kiosks and tobacconists.

Tickets of most interest for you are as follows:

  • BIT (1.50 Eur), unlimited bus travelling within 100 minutes from first bus ride, including at most one subway (metro) journey. Remember to stamp your ticket using the onboard/station machine as soon as you get into your first bus/subway.
  • CIS (24.00 Eur), unlimited bus/subway travelling for 7 days (can be bought at newspaper kiosks and tobacconists at Termini or Tiburtina train stations). Remember to stamp your ticket using the onboard machine as soon as you get into your first bus/subway and to write your full name on it.

If you have a mobile Internet connection available, you can download the official app “Muoversi a Roma” (also in English) from ATAC (iOS and Android applications), the local transportation company, to have timely information about bus/subway lines, timetables, and waiting times at each bus stop.

If you plan to visit museums, have a look at Roma Pass, which also includes transportation.
